Coverage for Adult Children
The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act became a federal law in March 2010. A provision of the law requires health care plans to offer coverage to their members' adult children up to the age of 26 provided the adult children do not have access to group health coverage through their own employer or their spouse's employer.
For Dependents currently covered under the Plan who are approaching their 19th birthday, the Carpenters' Benefit Plans Office (Plan) will send out a Certification Form for Adult Child Coverage approximately one month prior to their 19th birthday. The member must complete, sign, and return this form to the Benefit Plans Office in order to extend coverage.
Adult children currently NOT covered under the Plan because they did not enroll during the special open enrollment period are only able to obtain coverage through the Plan if they experience a HIPAA qualifying event (example: loss of adult child's employer-sponsored coverage, etc.).
NOTE: Since the Plan qualifies as a Grandfathered Plan under the law, adult children are not eligible to enroll in the Plan if they have access to health coverage through their own employer or through their spouse's employer.
